Research in my laboratory is focused on understanding the factors that affect in vitro propagation of adult tissue specific stem cells particularly as they relate to cell types involved in skeletal muscle regeneration.  Projects focus on understating the effect of environmental influences that direct and maintain human adult stem cell phenotype, including self-renewal and function.  We are also developing cell delivery vehicles using modified natural biopolymers to regulate their degradation in vivo, increase cell survival, engraftment and functional skeletal muscle tissue regeneration.  The creation of skeletal muscle tissue functional engineered constructs employing a tunable mechanical environment and cells derived entirely from adult human tissue satellite cells/myoblasts and connective tissue fibroblasts, which we hypothesize will create in vitro models that can more appropriately predict the efficacy of therapeutic interventions for skeletal muscle disorders.
